Mary Potts, Firefighter turned Chef

Mary's Bio PicMichigan native, Mary Potts, brings a wealth of culinary experience to the Alehouse to create a beer-centric menu that has been shaped by years of travel overseas and her first, unique, career choice. Fresh out of high school, Mary became a firefighter. For a brief while, she was the youngest female firefighter in the U.S. After strong prompting from her mom, Mary learned to cook as a way to make it through hard times. She learned two irresistible recipes, spare ribs, and sloppy joes, and learned that food has power. She found that good food could please people and so cooking became Mary’s preferred form of entertainment.

After firefighting, Mary traveled through Europe and spent extensive time in Germany, where she found it difficult not to fall in love with beer. It was also here that the seeds were sown for the future Ypsi Alehouse menu.

Her menu at the Alehouse has the makings of an English gastropub with an Italian Osteria Philosophy. Meaning, good rustic pub comfort food presented on a small menu format that changes with the seasons, so that we may bring you the best and the freshest produce our local purveyors have to offer.
